We’re mad for Queensland blue gum woodlands – so quintessentially Australian. Wouldn’t it be tragic if we lost them? Well, technically they are a threatened ecological community, and we’re doing our best to restore it.
Did you know that there is only 1.5% of the pre clearing blue gum woodland still existing today and only 56 hectares is protected in reserves? Cherish has already replanted and protected 65 hectares with another 110 hectares underway.
Queensland Blue Gum woodland is a biologically productive ecosystem that provides food and shelter for a wide range of animals including kangaroos, wallabies, koalas, bandicoots, birds, bats, native rats and mice, reptiles and many invertebrates.
The grassy floodplains and deep-rooted trees play a prominent role in intercepting, storing and recycling nutrients, protecting soil from erosion, reducing stream sediment loads during high intensity rainfall events and regulating ground water.
Large mature trees also develop hollows that provide important nesting and roosting sites for a range of birds and arboreal mammals including the greater glider.

Tragically, less than 10 per cent of original Melaleuca irbyana forest remains.
Who doesn’t love a koala? We cannot imagine a world without these furry little critters, but unfortunately, they’re officially on the endangered species list.
The grey-headed flying fox is the largest Australian bat, with a head and body length of 23 to 29 cm.
Swift parrots – such a colourful, beautiful bird! Sadly, they’re also on the endangered species list.
Did you know that the greater glider is Australia’s largest gliding mammal? Sadly, Populations have declined by 80 per cent in just 20 years.
How do we restore at-risk habitat? Well, first we buy it, and then we give it a makeover, as only we can.
We’re all about restoring habitat, and we deliver our work through a three-pillar approach.
